The Asset Protection Strategy was originally set up by experienced financial advisers Matthew Mitchell and Daniel Bloomfield. Having been heavily involved in the mortgage market, when the downturn came they needed to evolve from mainly transactional to more relationship based businesses. They knew that the majority of their clients had done nothing about Wills and fewer still had Trusts. When they started to talk to clients about the risks they were facing by not having Wills & Trusts in place, they found them to be very receptive to the advice. Quite quickly a consistent additional source of revenue was created, that was unaffected by the turbulent mortgage market.

In late 2008, they researched the concept of asset protection in much greater detail. After conducting considerable due diligence, they decided it was essential to appoint a third party to handle the necessary legal work. They wanted to control the client contact - to ensure that their high level of client satisfaction was not lost - but they did not want to get involved directly in Will or Trust Writing or take the responsibility for the client advice.

Having recognised that Wills & Trusts were a great way to re-engage with their clients and, by that interaction, write more protection and wealth business, they started to explore how a business could be established to extended their experience to other brokers. A long-term colleague and friend, Jeff Smith, was approached to join them and within a few months The Asset Protection Strategy was launched.

He was a Top Producer for Legal & General for many of his 15 years with them before leaving to set up his own business. Jeff Smith - Commercial Director

With over 30 years’ experience across all areas of financial services sales & management - spent with Legal & General, John Charcol and Chase De Vere - Jeff joined The Asset Protection Strategy in 2009 as Commercial Director. His main objective is to bring this innovative and lucrative client service proposition to quality advisers across the UK.
